Light-Duty Trucks

The light-duty trucks category includes commercial truck classes 1, 2, and 3.

Class 1: This class of truck has a GVWR of 0–6,000 pounds.

Class 2: This class of truck has a GVWR of 6,001–10,000 pounds.

Examples:

  • Pickup truck

  • Minivan

  • Sport utility vehicle

  • Pickup truck

  • Panel truck

    • Canopy express

    • Panel van

  • Tow truck (may also be a medium or heavy truck)

Medium-Duty Trucks

Medium trucks are larger than light but smaller than heavy trucks. In the US, they are defined as weighing between 14001–26000 lb (6351–11793 kg). In North America, a medium-duty truck is larger than a heavy-duty pickup truck or full-size van. Some trucks listed as a medium also are made in heavy versions.

The medium-duty trucks category includes commercial truck classes 4, 5, and 6.

Class 3: This class of truck has a GVWR of 10,001–14,000 pounds or 4,536–6,350 kilograms.

Class 4: This class of truck has a GVWR of 14,001–16,000 pounds or 6,351–7,257 kilograms.

Class 5: This class of truck has a GVWR of 16,001–19,500 pounds or 7,258–8,845 kilograms.

Class 6: This class of truck has a GVWR of 19,501–26,000 pounds or 8,846-11,793 kilograms.1

Examples:

  • Box truck

  • Van

  • Cutaway van chassis

  • Medium-Duty Truck such as Ford F-650 in North America

  • Medium Standard Truck

  • Platform truck

  • Flatbed trucks (may also be light-duty trucks)

  • Stake bed truck (may also be light-duty trucks)

  • Firetruck (may also be a heavy truck)

  • Recreational Vehicle or Motorhome

Heavy-Duty Trucks

Heavy trucks are heavier than medium trucks. They weigh between 26001 to over 33000 lbs. There is no higher on-road classification.

The heavy-duty trucks category includes commercial truck classes 7 and 8. Drivers of vehicles in these classes are required to have a Class B commercial driving license (CDL) to operate the vehicle.

Class 7: This class of truck has a GVWR of 26,001 to 33,000 pounds.

Class 8: This class of truck has a GVWR of greater than 33,001 pounds including all tractor-trailers. 

Many heavy trucks listed are also made in medium-duty versions:

  • Concrete transport truck (cement mixer)

  • Mobile crane

  • Dump truck

  • Garbage truck

  • Log carrier

  • Refrigerator truck

  • Tractor unit

  • Tank truck

Very heavy trucks and transporters

Haul truck

ALMA Transporter.

Vehicles in this category are too large for highway use without escorts and special permits.

  • Haul truck, an exceptionally large off-road dump truck, common in mining operations

  • Ballast tractor, a very heavyweight power source for towing and pulling exceptional loads

  • Heavy hauler, a combination of power source and very heavyweight transporter

  • ALMA transporter is used for transportation of ALMA transporter antennae.
